Open Position

Position Title: Cathedral Canon of Administration

Reports to: Dean of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral

Position Overview: Reporting to the Dean, the Canon will be a senior member of the clergy team. The Canon will partner with the Dean as an organizational manager, thought partner, and spiritual mentor for volunteers, cathedral staff, and the congregation.

This role supports the Dean by overseeing administrative functions, managing staff, and ensuring the effective implementation of the Cathedral’s mission, vision, and strategic plans. The Cathedral Canon of Administration acts as the chief of staff, enabling the Dean to focus on preaching, teaching, pastoral care, relationship building, and financial development.

The Episcopal Church exists to restore all people to unity with God and each other in Christ. At Trinity Cathedral, we share the love of Jesus by creating space for all people to worship, serve, and find refuge.

Core Values and Responsibilities:

1. Word and Sacrament:

a. Support the Dean in promoting the gospel through compelling preaching, teaching, and pastoral care.

b. Participate in Sunday and weekly worship services on a schedule with other clergy

c. Preach regularly

d. Teach in Adult Formation classes

e. Occasional pastoral visits and services

2. Renewal:

a. Foster Lifelong Renewal: In partnership with the Dean, develop and implement programs and initiatives that support the spiritual growth and renewal of the congregation and the wider community.

b. Encourage Innovation: Promote innovative approaches to ministry that bring renewal to the people of Trinity Cathedral and the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh.

3. Community Engagement:

a. In consultation with clergy and volunteers, oversee outreach ministry efforts: Coordinate the Cathedral’s community engagement initiatives, discerning and addressing the needs of the local community.

b. Mobilize Resources: Work with the congregation to mobilize resources, time, and talents to support and further God’s work through community outreach and service projects.

4. Stewardship:

a. Manage Resources Responsibly: Oversee the Cathedral’s financial and physical resources, ensuring responsible stewardship and sustainable growth.

b. Promote Generous Giving: In collaboration with the Dean, foster a culture of generous and faithful stewardship within the congregation.

c. Under the supervisor of the Dean, participate in the planning and execution of fundraising efforts.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Operational Leadership:

a. Under the leadership of the Dean, oversee daily operations of the Cathedral, including facilities management, administration, and program implementation.

b. Ensure efficient workflows and processes to support the Cathedral’s mission.

c. Establish the Cathedral’s congregational development strategy with tools for measurement

d. Help to implement and manage aspects of the Cathedral’s strategic plan.

2. Administrative Management:

a. In consultation with the Dean, lead program staff team

b. In partnership with the Office Manager and Sexton, oversee day to day operations of the church

c. Manage staff and volunteers

d. Supervise administrative functions, including budgeting, financial oversight, and resource allocation.

e. Ensure compliance with diocesan policies and procedures. Develop and implement administrative policies and practices that enhance the Cathedral’s operations.

3. Program Development and Implementation:

a. Collaborate with clergy and lay leaders to develop and execute programs that align with the Cathedral’s mission, core values, and strategic plan.

b. In consultation with the Office Manager, oversee planning and coordination of events, retreats, and educational opportunities.

4. Staff Supervision and Development:

a. Lead, mentor, and support Cathedral staff and volunteers, providing direction and professional development opportunities.

b. Conduct regular performance reviews and provide feedback to staff members.

5. Community Engagement and Outreach:

a. Support the Cathedral’s community engagement efforts by coordinating outreach activities and service projects with other staff and volunteers.

b. Develop partnerships with local organizations, other faith communities, and diocesan entities to further the Cathedral’s mission.

6. Communication and Collaboration:

a. Serve as a primary point of contact for internal and external stakeholders.

b. Facilitate effective communication between the Dean, staff, vestry, and congregation.

7. Strategic Planning and Implementation:

a. Assist the Dean in developing and implementing the Cathedral’s strategic plan.

b. Ensure alignment of Cathedral activities with strategic goals and objectives.

Focus Areas for the Dean:

By delegating operational responsibilities to the Cathedral Canon of Administration, the Dean can focus on the following key areas:

1. Preaching: Delivering compelling and inspiring sermons to guide and uplift the congregation.

2. Teaching: Leading educational programs and initiatives to deepen the congregation’s understanding of faith and theology.

3. Pastoral Care: Providing spiritual guidance, support, and care to members of the Cathedral community.

4. Relationship Building: Fostering strong relationships within the congregation and with the wider community to build a supportive and connected faith community.

5. Financial Development: Leading efforts in fundraising, stewardship, and financial planning to ensure the Cathedral’s financial health and sustainability.

6. Governance: Oversee matters of governance with Cathedral Chapter, volunteers, staff, and Diocesan Office.

Qualifications:

1. Commitment to the mission, vision, and core values of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral.

2. Ordained Episcopal priest with at least 5 years of administrative and leadership experience.

3. Strong organizational and management skills, with the ability to oversee complex operations.

4. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships and work collaboratively.

5. Strategic thinker with experience in program development and implementation.

6. Ability to inspire and lead a diverse team of staff and volunteers.

7. Plays well with others.
